Position Summary:
This position is a part of our People Services team. People Services is committed to taking care of our employees and helping to make NISC a great place to work. The HR Specialist helps our team achieve that goal in several ways, but primarily includes administering benefits & employee policies (including first day orientation every other Monday), managing workers compensation, supporting wellness and ergonomics efforts, maintaining critical HR data, and assisting with employee's questions around company benefits & qualifying events.
As both a resource and advocate for NISC employees, the HR Specialist has an open door and is regularly available to staff and often serves as a first point of contact on a range of employee matters.
Work Schedule:
- Hybrid from the following office location:
- Mandan, ND
- Hybrid Schedule: Minimum of working 3 day per week out of an office location and ability to work up to all 5 days a week from an office location.
- Required Days from an Office Location: Tuesday and Wednesday - the third required day will be up to the candidate and their supervisor to choose .
Essential Duties:
- Conduct new hire orientation related to benefits, policies, and employee resources, including processing i9 verifications both virtually and in person.
- Administer medical, dental, vision, disability, group life, section 125 and other employee benefit programs, including processing enrollments, qualifying events, terminations and COBRA administration.
- Process and track FMLA leave, workers compensation claims, and disability claims.
- Counsel employees regarding work, family or personal problems.
- Serve as a contact for employees regarding policy, and other HR-related questions.
- Assist with revision and interpretation of Human Resources policies.
- Draft content for internal employee communications and post blogs and announcements.
- Provide support to NISC employees and record interactions in CRM tool.
- Maintain employee records and other data in the HRIS, including processing hires, status changes, promotions, and terminations.
- Assist employee committees to plan and execute events and activities.
- Support hiring process and recruitment efforts, including preparing new hire paperwork and attending job fairs, as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Preferred:
- 3+ years of related experience preferred.

- Ability to collaborate with others and work as part of a team.
- Moderate level knowledge of general HR policies and practices, employee benefits, and the legal environment of human resource administration

- Excellent telephone/email etiquette and an ability to deal effectively with Member/Customers.
- Strong research and problem-solving skills with a strong attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to showcase a high level of empathy and ability to build trust with others.
- Commitment to confidentiality and possesses an excellent sense of professionalism when handling sensitive HR data.
- Travel as often as necessary to meet the goals and objectives of the position.

Education Preferred:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or equivalent experience.
